Kdy\u017e jsem poprv\u00e9 vystoupil z letadla na Nov\u00e9m Z\u00e9landu, vlastn\u011b jsem nev\u011bd\u011bl, co m\u00e1m o\u010dek\u00e1vat. V\u011bd\u011bl jsem jen, \u017ee pot\u0159ebuji na chv\u00edli ut\u00e9ct \u2013 od shonu, hluku a ne\u00faprosn\u00e9ho b\u011bhu \u010dasu. U\u017e b\u011bhem prvn\u00edch dn\u016f jsem c\u00edtil, \u017ee tady plyne \u010das jinak. Jako by mi stromy \u0161eptaly, abych zpomalil, jako by v\u00edtr nesl slova, kter\u00fdm jsem zat\u00edm nerozum\u011bl, ale p\u0159esto mi byla pov\u011bdom\u00e1.<\/p>

Jednoho r\u00e1na, p\u0159i t\u00fa\u0159e kolem jezera Taup\u014d, jsem potkal star\u0161\u00edho mu\u017ee \u2013 Maora jm\u00e9nem Rangi. Sed\u011bl pod mohutn\u00fdm stromem pohutukawa a hled\u011bl na klidnou hladinu vody. Usm\u00e1l se a gestem m\u011b pozval, abych si p\u0159isedl. Moc nemluvil, ale jeho p\u0159\u00edtomnost v sob\u011b nesla s\u00edlu, jakou jsem u\u017e dlouho nec\u00edtil.

Ale p\u0159edev\u0161\u00edm m\u011b znovu nau\u010dil b\u00fdt tich\u00fd s\u00e1m v sob\u011b. A v tom tichu jsem usly\u0161el sv\u016fj vlastn\u00ed hlas \u2013 ten, kter\u00fd jsem ztratil v hluku sv\u011bta.
Kdy\u017e jsem odj\u00ed\u017ed\u011bl, Rangi mi podal mal\u00fd k\u00e1men \u2013 hladk\u00fd, zelen\u00fd, vyryt\u00fd listem stromu, kter\u00fd je v maorsk\u00e9 kultu\u0159e symbolem s\u00edly, l\u00e9\u010den\u00ed a ochrany\u2026
